Methodika was great. I enjoyed every moment. Once again I had the opportunity of working with one of those near-extinct ex-students of the holy Maria Knebel. Can you imagine?!!
After a playing around with Pirandello for a week under the guidance of Adolf Shapiro I got a whole new picture of all those things that I have been hearing from the likes of Jurij Alschitz (and one or two others) for a decade or so, and that I had understood quite clearly in theory, but still not felt comfortable enough to say; okay, I get it, I know what it's all about, I know what to do with it.
But now I can say just that. I've found the missing link between Vasiliev and Stanislavsky and believe I have a fuller picture and I think I know what to do with it, how to use it. Well, at least I've taken a giant step in that direction.
Since I got back, first from the Cosmo thing and then from the Method thing, my students have been having fun at my expense. They seem to think I've become someone else. Someone who is positive and inspired (oops, I almost said happy) and that sort of nonsense, which of course isn't all that good for my image. I wouldn't want to ruin my reputation as being a tired and cynical old theatre director with one foot in the grave, how would that look?
So I look out of the window into the cold, dark, damp winter evening (the month of the drowned dog as Ted Hughes once described this time of year) and it reminds me of the climatic changes and the drab future of humankind and then I start feeling normal again.
But the next day a couple of students tell me that my latest lesson created an experience of catharsis and for a moment I think well who knows, perhaps I'll direct again some day. Bud just for a moment.
So, does that answer your question? Well, if you want a better answer, you'll have to buy me a beer.
